A Celebration of the Arts in Political Action
-
2006 Theme: “Visible Work, Invisible Workers ”
Media Categories: Music or Spoken Word / Poetry or Visual Arts
DEADLINE: July 15, 2006
This year’s Bread and Roses Reception will take place on Friday, September 1 at 7 pm at a location to be determined.
“Bread & Roses” is created to be an annual celebration of the arts in political action, . As the labor hymn for which the event is named reminds us, “Hearts starve as well as bodies…”
Each year the Bread & Roses event will call for submissions on a different theme, drawn from the struggles we work on in the Jobs with Justice coalition. We ask that this year’s Bread and Roses submissions relate to “Visible Work, Invisible Workers”. As attention is often focused on glaring abuses to workers such as those found in foreign country sweatshops, for example, we often lose sight of the workers in America such as miners, or cleaners, or migrant farmhand workers, whose products and contributions to our societies are visible and rewarding, yet their hard work and their struggles are often invisible.
We invite artists and workers living within the St. Louis Metropolitan area to explore the paradox of visible work that benefits the health and quality of life of American citizens, but which provides minimal dignity or health conditions for the invisible workers. We will accept submissions of Visual Art or Poetry/Spoken Word or Music.
We will accept submissions of Visual Art or Poetry/Spoken Word or Music. Explore the links below for more details...
